Shalimar Abbiusi engages Nigerian Senate leadership to foster Pan-African collaboration

Accra, Ghana – March 19, 2025 – Renowned human rights advocate and international spokesperson, Shalimar Abbiusi, has met with prominent Nigerian Senate figures, including His Excellency Comrade Adams Oshiomole and Senate Leader Dr. Bamidele.

The discussions centered on forging partnerships aimed at advancing governance reforms and promoting a different , more positive narrative for the African continent.

Abbiusi, known for her unwavering commitment to social justice, has previously demonstrated her dedication through various initiatives. In November 2024, she announced the “I Am Human Foundation” launch in Belgium, focusing on addressing human rights issues and supporting marginalized communities across Africa.

Her advocacy has also led to significant legal victories. In November 2024, the ECOWAS Court ruled in her favor, ordering the Ghanaian government to pay compensation for the violation of her fundamental rights following her wrongful arrest and deportation in December 2023.

Abbiusi’s influence extends into media and electoral processes. In October 2024, she was appointed as an electoral journalist for the African Union elections, reflecting her dedication to enhancing governance and social progress across Africa and as coördinator & spokesperson for the International Organisation of Transport and logistics within AU/ECOSOC .

Her recent engagement with Nigerian Senate leadership underscores her ongoing efforts to collaborate with key African institutions, aiming to drive systemic change and amplify the voices of marginalized communities.

Abbiusi expressed her enthusiasm about the meeting, stating, “Engaging with leaders who are pivotal in shaping Africa’s future is both inspiring and motivating. Together, we can initiate transformative projects that resonate with the aspirations of our people.”

This meeting marks a significant step towards strengthened Pan-African partnerships, with Abbiusi at the forefront of advocating for human rights and governance reforms

Shalimar’s Recent Visit to Sierra Leone – Empowering Women and Supporting Marginalized Communities

During her visit, Shalimar met with members of Sierra Leone’s Female Parliamentary Caucus, including Hon. Bernadette Wuyata Songa, President of the Caucus, and Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay, the longest-serving female Member of Parliament. The discussions focused on the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act, which mandates a 30% quota for women in parliament, cabinet, and other key institutions. This policy has significantly increased female representation in the legislature, with women now holding 30.4% of the 135 elected seats, up from 14.5% in the previous election.

Shalimar also visited the Kroo Bay community in Freetown, one of the city’s most marginalized areas. There, she met with local women entrepreneurs who shared their challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and limited access to education and financial resources. In response, Shalimar provided financial support to these women and pledged to return with further empowerment initiatives, such as vocational training and business development programs.

Engagement with Government Officials

In addition to community outreach, Shalimar held meetings with government officials, including the Vice President’s office, to discuss governance and potential collaborations for national development. She commended the government’s efforts in prioritizing women’s issues and facilitating her visit, expressing a strong commitment to supporting initiatives that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in Sierra Leone.

Cultural Exchange and Exploration

Beyond her professional engagements, Shalimar took time to explore Sierra Leone’s rich cultural heritage. She shared her experiences through social media, highlighting the country’s attractions and vibrant culture, and expressing her admiration for its beauty and the warmth of its people.

Shalimar’s visit underscores her dedication to fostering positive change and supporting sustainable development in Africa, particularly in empowering women and uplifting marginalized communities. Her ongoing commitment to these causes continues to make a meaningful impact across the continent
