The Gbese District Court in Accra has directed that Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, be transferred to a hospital for medical attention while in custody, with the State covering the treatment costs.
Abu Trica, who is facing extradition to the United States over allegations of orchestrating an $8 million online romance scam, has been described as “sick” during court proceedings.
The court emphasized the need to ensure his health is adequately addressed before further legal actions.
Alongside two co-accused, Abu Trica has been denied bail and remanded in custody over charges of cybercrime and money laundering.
Prosecutors allege that he ran a sophisticated scheme targeting mainly elderly victims abroad, employing fake online identities and AI-generated profiles to extract large sums of money.
The court also cited the seriousness of the charges and the risk of flight in its decision, but prioritized his medical care in the interim.
The case has been adjourned to January 13, 2026, as authorities prepare for further legal proceedings and potential extradition to the United States.
