A group of soldiers have allegedly brutalized a civilian named Daniel Sakyere AKA Xylem, who was watching a football match which resulted in an argument.
Eyewitnesses reported that Xylem was enjoying a peaceful evening watching a football match when tensions escalated on the field.
An argument between players quickly escalated, leading to one of the players summoning military personnel for reinforcement.
“Without proper verification or discernment, the soldiers reportedly turned their aggression towards innocent bystanders, including Xylem.
“The soldiers’ alleged actions have prompted outrage from both local communities and human rights organizations. Xylem’s injuries, described as merciless and severe, have highlighted concerns about the excessive use of force and the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between civilian matters and military involvement,” one Mr. Kyei Baffour disclosed in a tweet dated August 18, 2023.
According to him, the incident sheds light on the need for proper training and protocols to ensure that military personnel act in accordance with the law and human rights standards, even in high-pressure situations.
“As discussions surrounding the incident continue to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences when misunderstandings escalate and individuals are subjected to violence at the hands of those entrusted with maintaining order.
“The incident involving Xylem calls for a comprehensive review of the relationship between the military and civilian affairs, urging authorities to take measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” Mr. Baffour concluded.
