A group of irate youth Monday raided a police cell in Somanya freeing colleagues of theirs remanded for last Friday’s chaos in the town.
Confirming the incident on Starr Today, the Public Relation Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Ebenezer Tetteh warned the police will clamp down any form of hooliganism in the area.
He said: “The police will not allow anybody to hold the whole of Somanya township hostage and that they are going to ensure that the laws apply without fear or favour.”
Violence broke at the police cells in Somanya today, Monday May 29, 2017 following the arrest of the alleged leader of last Friday’s chaos over ECG bills, Dindiindin Adamitey, an assemblyman.
The news of his arrest sparked violence in the area as the police resorted to firing warning shots in an attempt to disperse the angry crowd.
Meanwhile, the MP for Yilo Krobo Kofi Amoatey commenting on the development, blamed the police in Somanya for the violence.
Chiding the police, he described their decision to arrest the so-called ringleader of the mayhem witnessed last Friday as “unfortunate” and “disappointing.”
According to him, his disappointment stems from the fact that the police flagrantly disregarded cautions he gave them against effecting any arrest.
He said “When I saw the mood of the people on Friday I suggested to the police that it is unwise to effect any arrest and that the thought of it should be suspended for dialogue.”
Background
Some residents of town clashed with staff of the ECG in the area last Friday over billing disagreements.
The angry residents caused damages to a pickup truck belonging to the state power distributor.
They were are protesting exorbitant bills submitted to them by the ECG this month.
An angry resident Philip Tetteh Padi who spoke to StarrFMonline.com said the ECG officials were going around the community disconnecting power to homes without explaining to indigenes the sudden ballooning in their bills.
“I paid GHC100 last month, but this month they brought me a bill of GHC4,500. We cannot pay such huge bills. We have embarked on a peaceful protest to seek answers for the quantum and shocking changes,” he said.
