The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been decorated with the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Award for World Unity in recognition of his efforts in promoting good governance, peace building, and international diplomacy.
The accolade was conferred during the 26th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World (ICCJW), held in Lucknow, India, from 19th to 24th November 2025. Organisers of the conference praised Speaker Bagbin for his “unstinting support to children’s appeals for world unity and world peace” and for safeguarding the future of over 2.5 billion children globally.
Prof. Sandeep Srivastava, Project Leader of ICCJW, eulogised the Speaker for his dedication to fostering global peace and for nurturing children to become future leaders in the mold of Mahatma Gandhi, Kwame Nkrumah, and Nelson Mandela.

The award was received on behalf of Speaker Bagbin by Ambassador Jonathan Rexford Magnussen, who expressed profound gratitude to the organisers and reaffirmed the Speaker’s commitment to championing peace and unity worldwide. Ambassador Magnussen highlighted Speaker Bagbin’s role as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Task Force addressing the Russia-Ukraine conflict and lauded his influence in international parliamentary affairs.
The ICCJW convened this year to tackle pressing global challenges, including rising conflicts, climate-induced crises, and fractured governance, with over 123.2 million people displaced globally in 2024, according to the UNHCR Global Trends Report. The conference emphasised the need for a renewed framework for collective security and drew attention to Article 51 of the Indian Constitution, advocating for international peace, lawfulness, and dispute resolution.
Other notable awardees included the Indian Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh. The Mahatma Gandhi Award for World Unity further cements Speaker Bagbin’s reputation as a global statesman and a champion of democracy, peace, and unity.
