The Member of Parliament for Effia Constituency in the Western Region, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has expressed that he expects Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Bagbin to take strict action if the high rate of absenteeism among MPs continues.
Speaking on GHOne TV on Thursday, October 30, Boamah-Nyarko said that strong measures are necessary to keep legislators accountable and active in parliamentary business.
“If this level of MP absenteeism continues by the end of this third sitting, I expect Speaker Bagbin to bite…,” he remarked.
The MP made the comments while weighing in on concerns raised by the Speaker regarding the growing number of lawmakers missing parliamentary sittings.
Speaker Bagbin has warned that MPs who regularly absent themselves risk facing disciplinary action.
“I have given directives to the clerks at the table to take the records for this meeting. We will be taking action to compel members to sit or to be considered to have vacated their seats,” the Speaker said, emphasizing that persistent absenteeism could also result in MPs losing their seats.
Boamah-Nyarko noted that such disciplinary measures are essential to keep legislators in line, adding that he would be surprised if Speaker Bagbin fails to “bite” as he had indicated.
