Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced the approval of an $860,000 budget for the Black Stars’ upcoming World Cup qualifier against Chad in N’Djamena.
Adams, who also serves as a Member of Parliament, has faced criticism for not disclosing budgets for Ghana’s recent international assignments despite President John Mahama’s directive in February.
Addressing the press on Monday, he clarified that budgets are not being hidden but are subjected to careful review.
“The estimate submitted for Match Day 7 was over $1 million,” he revealed. “After review, the Ministry approved about $860,000. We ensure that items are properly vetted before final approval.”
He explained that flight tickets for players and officials remain one of the biggest cost factors, but the Ministry has taken measures to cut down inflated estimates.
“The flat amount was $6,000 per ticket for all 28 players and officials. Often, tickets presented to the Ministry are higher than necessary, so we review and sometimes use alternative means to secure them,” Adams added.
Otto Addo’s squad departed Accra on Tuesday for N’Djamena, where they will face Chad at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno on September 4.
The team will then return to host Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8.
