Former Member of Parliament for Okaikoi North, Issah Fuseini has urged the NDC to stop witch-hunting approach to fish out members who voted to approve President Akufo Addo’s ministerial nominees.
Civil society groups and a section of the public have criticized the minority caucus in parliament for voting to approve six ministerial nominees and two Supreme Court judge nominees contrary to a directive from leadership of the opposition NDC to vote against the nominees.
Speaking on GHOne TV, Mr. Fuseni called on the leadership of Parliament to intervene on the matter.
“I am not too sure how my friend Fifi Kwetey is going to determine who voted against or in favor of the party. I have seen on social media some purported clips of some MPs taking photos. I have also seen a group petitioning the Speaker of Parliament on the MPs who went contrary to the Standing Orders of Parliament.
“Because this is supposed to be a secret vote, how a Member of Parliament gets into the voting booth with a phone and takes a snapshot of how he or she voted just because they want to find favor with the General Secretary of their party and party position. I think these are things that Parliament must get up on,” Mr. Fuseini stated.
He continued: “I will not sit here and lambast or praise MPs but I will support the institution of Parliament and I will say until we support Parliament it is going to be difficult to enjoy the proceeds of the democratic governance that we have.”
The former MP further stated that the constitution has given the President a free hand to put a government in place that he thinks is necessary at any point in time.
“We keep talking about size and bloated government. These are people who have cut their salary by 30 percent but people want to see this reduction or other measures but they have cut their salary by 30 percent already. That is a lot of sacrifice already coming from the President and his appointees.”
