A 30-year-old man has been arrested after the chief of Adanse Dompoase, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II, was injured by a stray bullet during a funeral ceremony in Obuasi on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council reported that the incident occurred when a musketeer fired a gun at the event, striking the Dompoasehene, who was immediately rushed to the hospital. He has since received treatment and been discharged.
According to Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, police quickly intervened and apprehended the suspect, identified as Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is now assisting with investigations.
The shooting took place as the Dompoasehene exchanged pleasantries with the Omanhene of Asebu Kwamankese and other traditional leaders attending the final funeral rites of the late mother of the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin.
Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the significance of the nationwide temporary ban on firearms at funerals and traditional gatherings, saying, “The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere.” He urged full compliance with the ban.
The Regional Coordinating Council called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue and measures are taken to maintain peace and order across the region.
