A total of 2,241 street beggars have been cleared from major urban centres across Ghana as part of a national effort to address streetism and restore order in public spaces.
This was revealed by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, during a press briefing on July 14, 2025. According to him, the Ministry, through the Ghana Immigration Service, has intensified the repatriation of foreign nationals involved in street begging.
“As of now, 2,241 persons have been repatriated from the streets of major cities including Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale,” the Minister stated.
He explained that most of the individuals removed from the streets were foreign nationals who had entered Ghana and taken to begging as a means of livelihood, often with children in tow. The operation aims to protect public safety, human dignity, and social order.

The Ministry has assured that the campaign will continue, with close collaboration between the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and Department of Social Welfare to address the root causes of streetism, particularly in areas with growing populations of non-Ghanaian beggars.
Government says the intervention is also part of broader efforts to ensure that public spaces remain safe, orderly, and conducive for economic activity under the 24-hour economy framework.
