About 200 traders in the Tamale Metropolis are threatening to hit the street today, Wednesday in protest of the decongestion exercise there.
On May 15, 2017 chaos broke on the streets of Tamale as city authorities dispatched bulldozers and other heavy towing equipment to pull down shops, clear wares and seize items on pavements and expressways.
Angered by the ruthlessness of the exercise, the traders have decided to register their displeasure with a protest.
“We have no option than to demonstrate. It is not going to be easy at all. We are about 2000 traders. So I promise you the demonstration will not be easy,” spokesperson of the Tamale Traders Association, Awal Mohammed disclosed Wednesday on Morning Starr.
The exercise, according to him, has left many traders mostly women devastated.
On Tuesday May 23, a subchief of Tamale responsible for Entertainment, Mohammed Hafiz Demanaa was severely assaulted after he led a team of armed soldiers to evict petty traders and hawkers who were forcibly driven away from the streets last week in the decongestion exercise.
He has been leading the security forces to pull down traders wares on expressways and tow them to the Tamale Metropolitan assembly office in the exercise that city authorities said would continue unabated.
The traders got angry and attacked him in the full glare of the armed soldiers and physically manhandled him.
Many people suffered various injuries while the soldiers were trying to rescue the subchief who has been a target by a section of Tamale residents.
