President John Dramani Mahama has officially opened the 2026 Judicial Year at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha, Tanzania.
The ceremony also marked the 20th anniversary of the Court, an institution tasked with upholding human rights across the African continent. Mahama addressed judges, diplomats, and representatives of civil society and the media during the opening.
“I am truly honoured to join you this morning for the official opening of the 2026 Judicial Year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” he said, highlighting the significance of the Court’s role in protecting human rights.
Reflecting on the history of the Court, Mahama noted that its establishment ensures a continent-wide mechanism to safeguard justice, rule of law, and human dignity. He underscored that the Court acts as a moral compass, guiding African nations to respect the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
Mahama also acknowledged the contributions of Ghana to the Court over the years, including the service of respected legal minds such as Justice Sophia Akuffo, who served as President of the Court and later Chief Justice of Ghana.
Concluding his remarks, he called on African nations to deepen their commitment to the Court, ensuring that it remains a pillar of justice for generations to come.
