The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council has cautioned social media users and traditional leaders against creating online platforms that could inflame tensions between the Tema and Nungua traditional areas amid their ongoing dispute over the Meridian Rock.
The Council said the growing exchanges among young people from the two communities were a source of concern, warning that activities on social media could further threaten peace and security in the Greater Accra Region.
In a statement dated November 4, 2026, the Council urged both traditional and social media actors to avoid actions that could escalate the disagreement.
“The Peace Council finally urges both traditional and social-media to avoid creating any platforms that may escalate tensions in both traditional areas,” the statement said.
The warning comes as the disagreement over the ownership of land and the Meridian Rock continues to attract public attention, with social media providing a platform for exchanges between people from the two traditional areas.
The Council said it was important for the feuding parties to engage in constructive discussions rather than allow their differences to deepen divisions.
It stressed that both communities had shared interests that should encourage them to pursue an amicable settlement.
“The Council also wishes to state that it is very important for the feuding parties to sit at ‘the dialogue table’ to discuss all concerns with openness, mutual understanding and respect,” the statement said.
“It recognizes the fact that there are more things that unite chiefs and people of both communities than divide them.”
The Council further called on all stakeholders to support efforts towards a lasting resolution through dialogue, negotiations and reconciliation.
It also advised that disagreements should be addressed through the appropriate institutions to facilitate constructive engagement and build consensus.
“The Council therefore advises that disagreements should be addressed through the appropriate institutions to facilitate constructive engagement and build consensus for mutually acceptable outcomes,” it added.
The dispute between Tema and Nungua involves disagreements over the ownership of land and the Meridian Rock.
The Meridian area is historically significant to Tema, with the original settlement located around the area associated with the former Meridian Hotel before the development of the Tema Harbour and the relocation of residents to Tema Manhean.
The dispute gained renewed attention in January 2026 when some youth from Tema Manhean protested against redevelopment activities at the former hotel site, citing concerns about the preservation of their ancestral heritage.
The Peace Council is urging stakeholders to prioritise responsible communication, institutional engagement and peaceful negotiations to prevent the dispute from escalating.
