The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike effective Friday, September 19, 2025, in protest against what it calls government’s persistent neglect of non-teaching staff in the education sector.
In a statement signed by its General Secretary, King James Azortibah, TEWU directed all members across public and technical universities, the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, and the Museums and Monuments Board to withdraw their services and remain at home until further notice.
According to the union, the strike became unavoidable after months of unheeded petitions and failed engagements with the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). The union insists that authorities have “persistently failed” to sign long-overdue Conditions of Service and address promotion grievances affecting its members.
Key demands outlined by TEWU include:
- Immediate signing of Conditions of Service for non-teaching staff across universities, the GES, Ghana Library Authority, and Museums and Monuments Board.
- Inclusion of GES non-teaching staff in the September 2025 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance.
- Resolution of unresolved promotion cases, including staff left unpaid on new salary scales or denied promotion letters despite passing interviews.
TEWU also accused the FWSC of dragging its feet and warned employers against intimidating members who comply with the strike directive, stressing that such actions would amount to unfair labour practices.
“The responsibility for the disruption of industrial peace in the education sector rests squarely with Government and its agencies,” the union emphasized.
