Deputy Chairman in charge of corporate services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare has dismissed claims of animosity between the EC and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), attributing recent disagreements to the usual dynamics of political competition.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Dr. Asare responded to questions regarding the NDC’s critical stance towards the EC, stating that any perceived tension is simply a product of the political process.
“There is no animosity between the EC and NDC. I think it’s politics as usual because the EC has conducted NDC internal elections for them – national executive, constituency executive, and regional executive elections.
“The EC has a constitutional obligation to do that for them, and we also did the flag bearer election for them as well, their MP primaries, which is not a constitutional mandate for the EC, but we did it for them,” Dr. Asare explained.
The NDC has been harsh on the Electoral Commission since Madam Jean Mensah took over the position as Commissioner in 2017.
The NDC accused the commission of rigging the 2020 elections and making sure the commission conducted free and fair elections before, during, and after December 7.
A few months back, NDC demanded a forensic audit of the voter register, and voter exhibition and lately rejected statistics from the commission.
Dr. Asare emphasized that while the NDC might disagree with certain EC decisions, this does not signify any inherent animosity.
“At times, the party does certain things you may not understand, but in terms of animosity, there is nothing like that,” Dr. Asare asserted.
Dr. Asare’s comments aim to de-escalate tensions and reassure the public of the EC’s commitment to impartiality and fairness in conducting the upcoming elections.
