The Assembly Member for Salakope and Amutinu in the Volta Region, Sylvester Kumawu has appealed to the government to extend the sea-defense project to his area to save residents from the yearly tidal waves that hit them.
According to him, tidal waves are rendering residents in the area homeless as well as destroying the Aflao, Keta road that brings economic gains to the people and the nation at large.
“The tidal waves are now a national threat; this is because the road that connects Keta to Aflao will soon be affected because as soon the sea gushes into the river it will affect the main road.
“We all know that the Aflao border generates a lot of revenue for the government. So if nothing is done on time to ensure that the sea defense wall is extended to these communities it will impact negatively on the country,” the Assembly Member told Starr FM.
Reporting from the affected Tidal Waves areas, Starr FM Volta Regional Correspondent, Faisel Abdul-Iddrisu disclosed that the livelihood situation of the people is really bad as they cannot go fishing because their nets are destroyed among others.
He, however, added that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for the Ketu South Municipality was assessing the situation with respect to what relief items to provide for the affected residents.
“A few minutes ago when the newly confirmed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) came here he told us that he had spoken with the Regional Minister; and the situation demanded that they level the ground. So that the people can start putting up structures,” he disclosed.
Abdul-Iddrisu described the current state of the Sea Defense Project in Keta and its environs as terrible.
