The Greater Accra Police Command will today arraign 26 Togolese nationals before the court for staging an unlawful demonstration before in Accra.
The demonstration was foiled by the Police after the Togolese converged at the Kawukudi Park in Accra to protest the current Political crisis that has bedevilled their country, Togo.
The Public Relations Officer for the Greater Accra Police Command, ASP Afia Tenge said the demonstration contravened the Public Order Act.
“The Police believes that gathering contravened the Public Order Act, initially they were made to disperse and afterwards about 26 of them including their leadership were arrested and will be arraigned before court today”.
Togo has been engulfed in a political crisis since August after a sustained protest by scores of citizens demanding that President Faure Gnassingbé steps down after he and his late father have together ruled the country for 50 years.
Authorities have often responded to the protests by blocking mobile and internet communication.
Why are people protesting in Togo?
Protesters are calling for the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe, who has been in power since his father died in 2005.
Gnassignbe’s father ruled for nearly four decades, having initially taken power during a coup d’etat.
The two elections – in 2010 and 2015 – since Gnassignbe took power have been marred by controversy, with the opposition calling them fraudulent.
Protesters want to see the return of the 1992 constitution that allowed only two presidential terms.
In an attempt to appease his opponents, Gnassignbe tabled a draft bill in September that would reform the constitution and reintroduce a two-term limit.
