Public transport fares across Ghana will rise by 20 percent starting Friday, August 8, 2025, following a directive from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and affiliated transport unions.
The fare hike is based on the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares and comes amid mounting operational costs for transport operators.
GRTCC, in a joint statement on Tuesday, August 5 outlined the reasons behind the decision.
The Council explained that despite a 15 percent fare reduction in May 2025, there has been no corresponding drop in the cost of spare parts and essential services.
This has left operators struggling to maintain profitability, according to them.
“In line with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares, the Road Transport Operators have increased public transport fares by 20 percent.”
The situation has been worsened by the recent introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy, which has led to an estimated 8 percent increase in fuel prices.
Transport companies say this new charge significantly raises operational expenses.
In addition, deteriorating road infrastructure across the country has led to higher vehicle maintenance costs, adding further pressure on transport businesses.
The 20 percent fare adjustment will apply across all public transport services. This includes shared taxis, intra-city minibuses commonly known as trotros, long-distance intercity coaches, and commercial haulage trucks.
The Council has directed all commercial transport operators and companies to implement the new fares and display them clearly at their respective loading terminals.
It is also urging the general public to cooperate to ensure the smooth rollout of the new pricing structure.
This is the second fare adjustment within three months. The previous revision in May 2025 saw a reduction in fares, driven by temporary fuel price relief and government interventions.
However, the GRTCC maintains that recent conditions, including infrastructure challenges have made a fare increase unavoidable.
