Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe has issued a stern warning to commercial drivers charging unapproved fares, particularly during peak hours, urging them to desist or face sanctions.
The warning follows mounting complaints from commuters in major cities about drivers exploiting passengers during high-traffic periods.
Speaking to the media in Parliament, the Saboba MP revealed that a national taskforce has been established to clamp down on fare extortion and enforce compliance with approved transport regulations.
He also called on commuters to report errant drivers to authorities for prompt action.
To ease the pressure on public transport amid rising human traffic during the festive season, the government has begun deploying additional buses on selected routes starting today.
Mr. Nikpe further indicated that in the near future, only unionized drivers will be permitted to operate commercially in the country, a move aimed at professionalizing and regulating the sector.
