Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized health as the cornerstone of Africa’s Reset, presenting it as the first sector to showcase sustainable, sovereignty-driven solutions.
Speaking at the launch of the Accra Reset on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Mahama highlighted the urgent need to rethink global governance models, particularly those that leave vulnerable populations underserved.
The initiative, under the theme “Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development”, frames Africa as the driver of its own development.
President Mahama pointed to Ghana’s strides in health as a model for the continent.
These include the passage of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Act, the establishment of a National Vaccine Institute with GHS 75 million in seed funding, and the upcoming rollout of free primary health care.
At the continental level, the Africa CDC and African Medicines Agency demonstrate Africa’s capacity to implement innovative, locally led solutions.
More than $1 billion in “reset-compatible” commitments have been secured from African development finance institutions and private banks.
Investments will be operationalized through instruments such as the Health Investor Multiplier, Synergy Tools, and blended finance deal rooms. Platforms including Panerbios, Proxpa, and the AfCFTA Hub are set to accelerate innovation and scale.
“But health is only the beginning. Africa is only our starting point. The reset looks beyond today’s crisis and identifies new pivots of growth—biodiversity, climate resilience, nutrition, and empowerment economies. These are trillion-dollar opportunities for inclusive prosperity,” President Mahama stated.
The initiative positions Africa not just as a beneficiary of global aid but as a leader in designing sustainable solutions that prioritize health, economic empowerment, and long-term resilience.
