A group in the Volta region has donated foodstuffs to children and widows in some 26 households in Amenyokorpe – border community in the Ketu North Municipality.
The items which were presented on Sunday 19 April 2020 included bags of rice, bathing soaps, bags of sachet water and a cash amount of Ghc100 for each household.
The donation is in response to calls from residents in the border communities for support as a result of the closure of the Ghana-Togo border which is believed to have come with severe economic implications.
According to Faustina Parker – leading member of the group, life has become extremely difficult for residents living in the border communities; especially the vulnerable.
“We find this initiative important and very necessary at a time that the borders have been closed. It’s the border that gives them food through the daily hustles they do here and so, survival is becoming a very difficult thing for them.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Parlous Kwablatsey Quashie, one of the donors called on government to come to the aid of these persons by providing relief items that could sustain them for the period.
He noted that the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic remains a collective responsibility, one that must draw the attention of everyone including individual persons.
