VIDEO: Akufo-Addo urges North East region to vote for Bawumia

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has formally thrown his weight behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) next presidential candidate. In a passionate address to the House of Chiefs in Damongo, the President praised Dr. Bawumia’s qualifications and leadership abilities, urging the chiefs to support him in his bid for the presidency.

“I am very concerned about who is going to come and sit in this room,” President Akufo-Addo said, emphasizing the importance of continuity and competent leadership. “I’m urging all of you here in the North East Region to come together as one and put your shoulder to the wheel to make your son, Mahamudu Bawumia, the next president of Ghana.”

President Akufo-Addo highlighted that his endorsement was based on Bawumia’s capabilities, not merely his ethnic or regional origins. “It’s not where you come from. It’s your quality. That’s what matters,” he asserted, adding that he had personally witnessed Bawumia’s skill and dedication throughout their years working together.

Recalling Bawumia’s earlier career, Akufo-Addo praised his performance as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, where he gained a reputation as a highly respected economist. “Paul Acquah, who was the governor of the Bank of Ghana at the time, had nothing but the best words of commendation for his deputy,” the President noted.

President Akufo-Addo reflected on his decision to select Bawumia as his running mate in 2008, a partnership that has endured through eight years of opposition and eight years in government. “Since then, up till today, we have worked hand in hand,” he said, underscoring the depth of their collaboration and trust.

The President’s appeal to the chiefs signals a significant push to consolidate support for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the 2024 elections, marking a critical moment in the NPP’s succession planning.

With this strong endorsement, Dr. Bawumia is poised to solidify his standing as a leading contender for the presidency, a bid that is expected to shape the future direction of the NPP and the country.
