Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annor-Dompreh has admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered a major electoral setback due to public dissatisfaction, stating, “Ghanaians got angry with us and they punished us for it.”
The NPP’s unprecedented electoral defeat in 2024 was largely attributed to apathy among its supporters, stemming from the delegate system used to elect parliamentary candidates.
Many registered voters who opposed the chosen candidates remained silent but expressed their disapproval by either voting against them or abstaining from the election.
This lack of enthusiasm on voting day significantly weakened the party’s chances, despite securing 6.7 million presidential votes against the NDC’s 6.2 million.
Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Annor-Dompreh revealed that the party was taken by surprise by the outcome of the election, as they had remained confident throughout the campaign period.
“The first reaction was a big shock. We never saw it. If there’s anyone in our party or our tradition who would say they saw it ahead of time, well… we were all confident,” he stated.
He admitted that while the party knew the election would be competitive, they never anticipated such a decisive loss. “Even if we were going to lose, it’s going to be a thing of the skin. This was tough. It was too much of a blow for us,” he said.
Annor-Dompreh added that political parties often enter elections with optimism, but the reality of the results can be humbling. “Everyone going into an election feels they are going to win until the reality dawns,” he noted.
