Lawyers for Gregory Afoko have dismissed claims by the previous prosecutions that the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga was not safe which the basis for the refusal of bail was.
Afoko was arrested on May 20, 2015, in connection with the murder of Adams Mahama, Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who died after an acid attack.
His detention has been the subject of legal battles, with an earlier bail grant in 2019 later overturned. Afoko is now set to regain his freedom while standing trial.
However, the High Court in Accra on Friday has admitted Gregory Afoko to bail in the sum of GHc500,000 after nearly a decade on remand in the case in which he is standing retrial for the alleged murder of the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama.
In addition to the bail sum, the Court presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons ordered him to produce two sureties one of whom is to be justified with a landed property.
As part of the bail conditions, Afoko is to report to the police – that is – the case investigator.
In his absence, the Court said he should report to the Regional Crime Officer (Greater Accra) or Director General – CID once every two weeks until the case is determined.
Speaking to GHOne TV’s court correspondent, Murtala Inusah, the Spokesperson for the Afoko family, Nana Yaw Osei Esq. refuted allegations that the North was no longer conducive for Afoko’s stay.
“We can’t state where he will be. That reason was not given by the family or by Greg’s lawyers. It was a reason concocted by the prosecution. And so, for us, it was untenable. Nothing of that sort was going to happen in Bolga or anywhere,” he stated.
He urged the public to disregard such claims and focus on the court’s decision, adding, “Let’s just dismiss that bit and be happy that the court has seen good reasons to grant him bail.”
