VIDEO: It’s not about money that I am engaged in activism – Barker-Vormawor

Lawyer and one of the leaders of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has stated that his involvement in activism is not financially motivated.

The Ghana Police Service arrested Oliver Barker-Vormawor, lead convener of the Democracy Hub protest, on Monday, September 23, 2024, due to allegations of unlawful conduct during the group’s September 21-22 demonstration. Although Vormawor was arrested alongside 53 others for their involvement in the #StopGalamsey protest, he was denied bail, citing the need for further investigation and potential public unrest if he was released.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor was released from police custody on Monday, October 21, 2024, after meeting a GHS 20,000 bail condition with two sureties.

Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Barker-Vormawor reaffirmed that financial gains and political appointments do not influence his passion and commitment to activism activities.

He highlighted that his driving forces for engaging in activism are principles and the need to drive reform in Ghanaian society.

He further stated that if he had been in activism for financial profit, he would not have left the United Nations.

“I think there are easier ways to earn a living. If a person is interested in political office or political appointment, I think that there are easier ways to do it. Sammy Gyamfi is a friend of mine. He doesn’t put himself in this line, you can just talk.

“There are so many other people who are just waiting for appointments, whatever government changes. They’re not putting themselves and their lives on the line for the cause of what they believe in. So it is not about money. If it were about money, I would have better stayed at the UN. It wasn’t about that. It’s a bigger question of principle, as to how we can live in this republic that so disregards our livelihoods and our humanity. That for me is a bigger question that drives me and animates me.”
