Leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah Esq., has called on President John Dramani Mahama to rename the seat of government from Jubilee House back to its original name, Flagstaff House.
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, Jantuah questioned the rationale behind the name “Jubilee House,” arguing that the original name held significant historical value and should be restored.
“I want President Mahama to change the name of the seat of government back to Flagstaff House,” he stated, emphasizing the need to preserve Ghana’s history for future generations.
He also criticized the naming of Kotoka International Airport after General Emmanuel Kotoka, who played a key role in overthrowing Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. According to Jantuah, naming Ghana’s main entry point after a coup leader contradicts the principles of the constitution.
“How do you name the entry of your country after someone who overthrew a legitimate government? It flies in the face of the constitution,” he argued.
Jantuah further questioned whether Ghanaians truly understood the historical significance of Flagstaff House, pointing out that similar colonial-era government structures existed in other countries, such as Nigeria. He compared it to notable global landmarks like Number 10 Downing Street in the UK, stressing that preserving original names helps maintain national identity.
“Our children today, do they know the history behind Flagstaff House and why it was called that? The colonial masters started Flagstaff House, and there was even one in Nigeria. Isn’t that history for our children?” he asked.
Jantuah believes that if the Supreme Court does not intervene, President Mahama should take it upon himself to restore the name, as he had previously suggested.
