The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammy Awuku has entreated the police and other law enforcement agencies to bite in the wake of political vigilantism by irate party youth.
Vigilante groups affiliated to the ruling NPP have been rampaging to register their displeasure over the appointment of some government appointees and demand for jobs. They have succeeded in locking up state offices and chasing out officials. The recent incident occurred in Techiman where some youth linked to the NPP locked up the NADMO office.
Speaking on the Morning Starr Tuesday, Mr. Awuku charged the police to act without fear or favour in order to restore public confidence.
He promised that he is ready to collaborate with the police to arrest some of the unruly youth, despite being party members because President Akufo-Addo does not represent violence.
“We’ll support the police to do their job,” Mr. Awuku told host of the show Francis Abban. “The Security Capos should stop breaking the heart of the president [Akufo-Addo].”
As the youth leader of the governing party, Mr. Awuku submitted that he “takes part of the blame” of the hoodlums, adding “but it’s an isolated case.”
“Millions of them voted for the party. I’ve not failed the youth of the party. I can’t go and arrest but can collaborate with the police to arrest offenders as a citizen,” Mr. Awuku stressed.
He promised to nip the issue of political vigilantism in the bud by the close of year.
“We’ll make the president smile. I’ll put a smile on his face soon,” Mr. Awuku promised before announcing that he will be “meeting youth organisers in the various regions over the issue.”
Mr. Awuku used the platform to condemn the unprovoked violence on officials and called on the youth to remain calm as government creates jobs for them.
