The Minority Caucus in Parliament made a strong statement at today’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) by President John Dramani Mahama, appearing in all-black outfits to protest what they call the unjustified dismissal of Ghanaian employees under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, a leading member of the Minority, took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to clarify their stance, stating:
“The Minority’s black outfit in Parliament today is in solidarity with the many Ghanaian employees who have been unjustifiably dismissed by the NDC Mahama government. The Ghanaian youth deserve better.”
The protest comes in response to a directive issued by the Office of the President, signed by Chief of Staff Hon. Julius Debrah, ordering the revocation of all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after December 7, 2024. The directive cites non-compliance with good governance principles as the reason for the dismissals and instructs heads of government institutions to annul such appointments and submit reports by February 17, 2025.
The Minority argues that this move has led to widespread job losses, particularly among young professionals, worsening the country’s unemployment situation. According to them, the action is politically motivated and unfairly targets individuals appointed during the transition period.
