Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has urged voters to avoid a ‘skirt and blouse’ pattern of voting in the December 7 General Election.
He emphasized the need for the electorate to give his party an overwhelming majority in both presidential and presidential elections.
Speaking at a mini rally in Akotombrah during his campaign tour of the Western North Region, Mr. Mahama admonished the electorate not to be swayed by incentives and handouts from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“We don’t want skirt and blouse in any form. I’ve traveled to many places and the impression from the NPP is that they know JM will be successful in the presidential election. So they are going about telling the people, ‘We know JM will win the presidency however, vote for us in the parliamentary elections.’ No, don’t fall for that,” Mr. Mahama admonished rally attendees.
He explained that if he were voted in power with an NPP majority in parliament, his priorities which included construction of major roads in the area, would be blocked in the House.
‘Skirt and Blouse’ in Ghanaian politics is a manner of voting in which a voter chooses a presidential candidate and a parliamentary candidate who belong to different political parties. The practice is not unusual in the country.
Mr. Mahama said such a situation could stifle the delivery of his campaign promises to the people and urged them not to entertain a ‘skirt and blouse’ voting pattern.
