President John Dramani Mahama has renewed his call for stronger intra-African trade, urging leaders across the continent to move decisively toward the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Speaking at Kenya’s 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations on Friday, December 12, 2025, President Mahama said expanding trade among African countries is critical to achieving economic independence and building resilient, self-sustaining industries.
“We must increase trade amongst ourselves until we commend the protocol on the African Continental Free Trade Area,” he stated.
According to Mahama, AfCFTA represents Africa’s most powerful instrument for reducing dependence on external markets, strengthening regional value chains, and unlocking shared prosperity across the continent.
Beyond trade, the President underscored the importance of Pan-African solidarity.
He praised Kenya for its humanitarian intervention in Haiti and announced that Ghana, in the same spirit, is deploying engineers from its 48th Engineers Regiment to support Jamaica’s rebuilding efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
