The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Prof. Amin Alhassan, has disputed recent claims his outfit received $3 million as the official broadcaster of the 2023 All African Games.
During a Public Accounts Committee session, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif asserted that GBC had been fully compensated with an amount exceeding $3 million for the event’s coverage.
This statement came in response to a query by Samuel George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, about the payment status for the African Games.
“GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th All African Games, and I can confirm that full payment has been made to GBC. I can’t remember the exact amount but I know that it is in the excess of $3 million,” says Mr. Yussif.
However, Prof. Alhassan has refuted these claims, clarifying in an interview with Uniiq FM that GBC only received $105,000 for its services. He explained that the bulk of the payment facilitated by the government was directed towards foreign third-party companies responsible for production, with GBC receiving only a fraction.
“We facilitated payments to foreign third parties who came in to do the production and not for the benefit of GBC. GBC’s benefit, I repeat, $105,000 and that is what we got”, says Mr. Amin
The Sports Minister is yet to respond to the Director-General’s counterstatement. The difference in the figures raises questions about transparency and communication between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, especially in the handling of public funds for major events.
