Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif has told Parliament government spent a little over $3 million on the failed outing of the senior national soccer team, the Black Stars to AFCON 2023.
The minister has also confirmed government budgeted over $8.5 million for the tournament.
In a statement on the floor of Parliament, the minister expressed disappointment at the turn of events at the tournament that saw Ghana once again exit at the group stage without winning a single game.
Consequently the minister revealed government intends holding a national dialogue to diagnose the reasons behind the ritual failings of the Black Stars for more than 40 years now and sports development in the country in general.
Other MPs took turns to have a bite at the predicaments of the team. North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for instance criticized government over the amount of money spent at the AFCON, describing it as a waste.
Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh charged the government to take a decisive action against the GFA and the role it plays in the failures of the team regardless of repercussions from FIFA.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh is Majority Chief Whip and he also presented a petition to the House on behalf of the #SaveGhanaFootball protestors who were in the gallery to witness proceeding.
