The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that 16 commercial drivers were arrested on Monday, January 26, 2026, for allegedly extorting passengers through illegal transport fare charges in parts of the Ashanti Region.
The arrests were carried out during a special enforcement exercise led by the Ashanti Regional National Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) John Kwame Jabari, with support from other security agencies. Several vehicles involved in the alleged offences were also impounded.
According to Dr. Amoakohene, the operation forms part of efforts to restore sanity in the commercial transport sector, following complaints from commuters about arbitrary and unauthorized fare hikes by some drivers.
He explained that the one-month-long exercise is a joint initiative between National Security and other security agencies, targeting fare-related violations and other forms of misconduct among commercial drivers, particularly ‘trotro’ operators.
The Regional Minister indicated that drivers arrested during the operation are likely to be prosecuted or fined in accordance with the law.
The enforcement exercise, which began on Sunday, January 26, 2026, is ongoing across selected areas within the Greater Kumasi metropolis as authorities intensify measures to protect commuters from exploitation.
