Two people have been confirmed dead and ten others injured after Police allegedly opened fire on some youth from Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti region who were demonstrating against the relocation of their district capital from Foase to Twedie.
The injured, according to Police sources, also include police officers.
The angry youth reportedly locked up the District Chief Executive (DCE), Nana Okyere Tawiah in his office and also blocked roads amid the burning of tyres.
The Police who arrived on the volatile situation, according to Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo fired teargas and warning shots before being able to set free the locked up DCE from his office.
A court ruling in 2012 directed the relocation of the capital and authorities have instituted measures to abide by the ruling.
Deputy Ashanti regional police commander DCOP Fred Adu Anim confirmed the deaths to Ultimate Fm’ Isaac Bediako Justice.
He said the regional police command has commenced investigations into the matter.
