Abdul Aziz Mohammed, a former member of parliament for Mion, has stated that Ghanaians voted for President-elect John Dramani Mahama due to his impressive track record in his previous administration.
Speaking to GHOneTv, Mohammed highlighted some reasons key behind, which he believes led to Mahama’s victory in the election.
He cited Mahama’s “unprecedented legacies and development” in infrastructure, rivaling only Dr. Nkrumah’s achievements.
This legacy, Mohammed argued, served as a strong foundation for Mahama’s re-election bid.
He added that Ghanaians judged Mahama based on his past performance as president, particularly his economic management.
According to him, during Mahama’s previous tenure, the dollar exchanged was around four cedis, which inflation also stood at 15%, and the debt-to-GDP ratio was 56%.
The former MP praised Mahama’s significant contributions to the health and education sectors, noting that Mahama invested approximately $2 billion in the health sector, resulting in notable projects like the Bank Hospital and the University of Ghana Medical Center.
Mohammed criticised the incumbent NPP government, labeling them as “looters” and a “bad government”, asserting that life was better under Mahama’s administration, which likely influenced the electorate’s decision to vote for his return.
He stated, “One has to do with unprecedented legacies and development, President Mahama apart of doctor Nkrumah would be next in terms of development in terms of infrastructure so we had a very good legacy to count as a bases for re-election and so we were very sure we were going to win this election.”
“President Mahama have had the chance of being president before so Ghanaians were judging him more of what he did when he was president. This time Ghanaians had something to use as a bases to judge. the credibility, the competence of president Mahama, they basically had to look at what president Mahama did, how he handled the economy. Before president Mahama left, the dollar was doing around four cedis, inflation was around 15%, our dept GDP was 56%.”
He added, “President Mahama injected about 2 billion US dollars in to the health sector so that why you can talk about the bank hospital , the university of Ghana medical center and several other regional and district hospitals.”
