Private legal practitioner and member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Kwesi Botchway Jr., has dismissed claims that former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) were pressured into endorsing the former Vice President ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries.
Speaking on GHOne TV’s News Tonight on Monday, June 23, 2025, Kwesi Botchway described the endorsement as voluntary and well thought through by the former MMDCEs.
“The former MMDCEs were not coerced to endorse Dr. Bawumia, they did so willingly,” he said.
According to him, of the over 260 former MMDCEs who served under former President Akufo-Addo, 220 have officially declared their backing for Dr. Bawumia, a move he believes is a glaring indication of the former Vice President’s influence within the party.
Mr. Botchway further highlighted Bawumia’s longstanding contribution to the party as proof of his readiness to lead.
“He’s a person with political consistency and value, and he’s been at the forefront of the party since 2008 therefore better placed to lead the party.”
He also pushed back on claims that Bawumia’s religion or candidacy led to the party’s electoral defeat in 2024.
“I vehemently disagree with the position that the candidature of Dr. Bawumia or the religion of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia contributed to the defeat of the NPP in 2024,” he stated.
