The Attorney General has filed a motion seeking an abridgment of time to hear an application from Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, the 2nd accused person, in the $2 million Sky Train financial loss case.

On June 24, Prof. Akumfi filed a motion seeking to strike out the charge sheet, make a reference to the Supreme Court, or stay proceedings on grounds of substantive prematurity.

The Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, is praying the court to abridge the time for hearing Prof. Akumfi’s motion to July 3, 2025, instead of the original date of July 9, 2025.

In an affidavit in support of the motion, Dr. Srem-Sai stated that Prof. Akumfi’s motion was filed in bad faith with the intention to delay proceedings.

The Attorney General’s office has already filed an affidavit in opposition to Prof. Akumfi’s motion.

Dr. Srem-Sai argued that the distant return date of July 9, 2025, would occasion unreasonable delay in the trial, which is contrary to the constitutional command for a speedy trial.

He further argued that abridging the time to July 3, 2025, would not occasion any miscarriage of justice to Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, as he would have been fully prepared to move the motion.

Background

Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairman of Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, and Solomon Asamoah, the former CEO, have pleaded not guilty to six charges, including willfully causing financial losses to the tune of $2 million in the Sky Train project.

The Office of the Attorney General is expected to parade eight witnesses to testify in the case.

The court’s decision on the abridgment of time will determine the next steps in the case. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s motion seeks an order striking out the action against him as premature, a reference to the Supreme Court on constitutional questions, and a stay of proceedings pending the determination of the constitutional question.
