Telecom giant, MTN, paid about Ghȼ 637 million in direct taxes to government through the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in 2016.
This amount, together with other payments made to the industry Regulator and other agencies sum up to about GHS1.1 billion paid out of the company’s 2016 total revenue of GHȼ2.7 billion.
The Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Cynthia Lumor, who disclosed this, during an annual Volta Regional Editors Forum held in Ho, said the company, which has been in operation for the past two decades, saw a 19.8 percent rise in its revenue over the period.
This, she attributed largely to the increasing demand in data services on the network.
Mrs. Lumor also noted that in line with the corporate vision leading the country’s digital revolution, MTN is continually investing towards a robust network through fibre optic extension and upgrading of cell sites so as to meet high data demand.
She added that, steps are being taken to minimize operational inefficiencies, fibre cuts and curb incidents of mobile money fraud to reach more people.
On MTN’s Social responsibility initiatives in the Volta region, the Corporate Services Executive indicated that, about 16 social intervention projects targeted at over 300,000 people would be undertaken in 2017.
