The Director of Communications at the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), George Ayisi, has described the current disaster that has left thousands along the Volta lake homeless as “the lesser of two evils”.
Nearly 26,000 people along the Volta lake have been displaced following the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA) since the 15th September.
But speaking to Francis Abban on GHOne TV‘s State of Affairs, George Ayisi warns the alternative to spillage could be catastrophic for the country.
“What we are seeing and the level of devastation but I am saying so because the VRA has made it clear that the dam retains about 156 billion metric tonnes of water and that is what it is holding as at now. And what they are spilling is about 6,000 metric tonnes and that is what it causing this.”, he revealed.
“Can you then imagine if anything happens to he structural integrity of the dam and this volume of water must move. It will submerge all the 9 districts and that is why what is happening is the lesser of the two evils”, he added.
George Ayisi adds that the potential total collapse of the dam and potential wipe out of all the towns along the lake is reason the VRA must continue its controlled spillage.
