Restore us back to normalcy -Residents of Appiatse to Govt

Residents of Appiatse have expressed worry as they wait for normalcy to be restored in their lives.

Despite the government commissioning 124 homes on Thursday. These homes are yet to be distributed.

However, Speaking to Starr News, some of the resident victims who were given monetary compensation after the incident in 2022, are asking for a fair share in the government homes arguing that the money attributed to them is not sufficient.

“We are not happy even though it is a good thing to commission it but we have to say that the thing happened one day. Why will you start for others and put others in pains. We should all be relieved of the pain the same day”.

“We are not in favor of what is happening. Whoever is in charge of phase three should double up so we get our building so we can feel at home,” the residents added

They are demanding authorities in charge of the third phase of the reconstruction project to be speedy in their work as they equally want their share of the government buildings.

Minority in Parliament lauded the government on reliefs given to residents of Appiatse two years down the line.

“I think they have done a good job but I am worried if the distribution is going to be fair. So far as I am concern, NPP will never do anything that will not have political coloration. They will definitely do politics with this”

“I am happy with the relief for victims but pessimistic over fair distribution. Those that were affected will be considered and those who lost their relatives should be catered for,” he added.

The government on Thursday commissioned 124 homes as part of the Appiatse reconstruction project.

The initiative came in response to the devastating events of January 2022, which saw the community ravaged and claimed the lives of 16 residents.

Over 120 housing units have been completed, offering new hope and a fresh start to the farming community, marking a significant milestone two years post-disaster.

The first phase of the reconstruction of residential infrastructure and social amenities for the farming community located between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality in the Western Region consists of 124 housing units, a kindergarten, a six-unit classroom block with sanitation facilities and the construction of roads within the community.

In January 2022, a vehicle carrying approximately 10 tonnes of mining explosives to the Chirano Mines collided with a motorcycle, triggering a massive explosion that leveled the entire community.

Following this tragic event, the government promptly initiated the reconstruction process. Now, 124 housing units and additional facilities have been constructed to support the survivors.

The newly built structures range from one-bedroom to seven-bedroom units and include enhanced amenities such as a market, six-unit classroom and kindergarten blocks, internal roads, water and electricity supply.
