The National Intelligence Directorate (NID) and the Ghana Police Service have arrested 14 suspects in connection with the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers saga. The arrests took place at Dongfang Manufacturing Company Yard and Ponlok, both located around Chi Hills.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai, addressing the media, confirmed that 11 of the suspects have identified themselves as Chinese nationals, while the remaining three are Ghanaians. The arrests were carried out last night, and in adherence to due process, all the suspects have been granted police bail while investigations continue.
Justice Srem-Sai emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration remains committed to recovering stolen state assets while upholding human rights.
“The police officers have admitted the suspects to police bail because we are mindful of the 48-hour limit for detention. However, as a precaution, the police have confiscated their passports to prevent them from leaving the country and have asked them to provide sureties who can ensure their availability for further investigations,” he stated.
The Deputy AG also hinted that the arrested individuals have provided leads suggesting that a larger syndicate is involved in the case. “We believe this is an organized group, and the police are actively working to apprehend more members,” he added.
He called on the public to support law enforcement by providing any relevant information that could lead to further arrests and the recovery of state funds.
“Millions of cedis have been lost due to this crime, and the law enforcement agencies, along with the Office of the Attorney General, are determined to bring all perpetrators to justice,” he assured.
Justice Srem-Sai encouraged citizens to cooperate with investigators, emphasizing that national interest is at stake. “Anyone with useful information should come forward and assist the authorities in bringing this matter to a conclusion,” he urged.
