The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned parents and guardians against social media reports suggesting that they are required to pay GH¢1,500 for chop boxes, trunks and other items under the Free Senior High School programme.
The Service said no such payment directive has been issued and urged the public to ignore the circulating information.
In a statement on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the GES said the Director-General has neither cancelled the Free SHS policy nor instructed parents to make any payments.
“Management has not cancelled the Free SHS policy, nor has the Director-General issued any directive requiring parents or guardians to pay any money for chop boxes, trunks or any other item.”
The GES further clarified that the Director-General does not have the authority to cancel the Free SHS policy.
“The Director-General of GES does not have the power to cancel a policy.”
Parents, guardians and students have consequently been advised not to hand over money to anyone based on the claims.
“Parents, guardians, students and the general public are therefore urged not to make any payments to anyone.”
The Service also urged the public to verify education-related information through its authorised channels and exercise caution with unverified social media posts.
GES has warned that false publications could create unnecessary anxiety and confusion among parents and students and appealed to the public and media organisations to desist from circulating such information.
