The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has issued a public apology following widespread backlash over a viral video in which he is seen handing out dollar bills to controversial Evangeslist Mama Pat, also known as Nana Agradaa.
In a statement posted on his official social media pages, Sammy Gyamfi described the incident as a “kind gesture to a fellow human being” and expressed regret that the moment, which he assumed was private, became public.
“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that,same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable,” he wrote.
The video, which surfaced online over the weekend, shows Nana Agradaa approaching Gyamfi’s vehicle and requesting some dollars, which he begins to count before she playfully grabs the bundle and flaunts it. The footage sparked criticism from sections of the public and NDC supporters, many of whom found the gesture distasteful in light of the country’s economic challenges.
Gyamfi acknowledged the uproar, particularly from party loyalists who expressed their disappointment.
“To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views,” he said.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to public service, emphasizing that his principles remain intact despite the incident.
“My view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems and help others, has not changed. I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President for the development of our country.”
On her part, Agradaa claimed the incident was spontaneous noting that she approached Gyamfi to apologize for previous comments she had made against the NDC. According to her, the exchange was light-hearted and not staged.
