Ashanti Regional Chairman of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail to the tune of GH¢50 million, with two sureties to be justified.
This development follows his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, after he voluntarily reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning. He was subsequently detained at the EOCO head office in Accra.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed to Starr News that his client is under investigation for allegedly causing financial loss to the state.
According to the lawyer, the bail is part of an ongoing police enquiry, allowing Chairman Wontumi temporary release as investigations continue.
Sources indicate that Wontumi endured several hours of intense interrogation before being granted bail. He reportedly fell ill during the process, further heightening public interest in the unfolding case.
