President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Armed Forces to provide armed escort and protection for all vehicles travelling within the Banku area as part of efforts to ensure safe passage along conflict-affected corridors.
The president announced during his visit to the North East Region in Nalerigu that, military protection will be provided along the Bawku-Pulmakom-Bolgatanga corridor and the Waluwale-Bolgatanga corridor, where security concerns have affected transportation and commerce.
President Mahama confirmed that the military escort services had already yielded results, stating that food convoy trucks that were blocked are no longer stocked in Bolgatanga and have reached their destination safely.
“I’ve instructed the Armed Forces to provide armed escort and protection to all vehicles travelling within the Bawku area, along the Bawku-Pulmakom-Bolgatanga corridor and also along the Walewale-Bolgatanga corridor,” he said.
During his speech, he noted that in line with the ruling National Democratic Congress manifesto and the 2025 budget, government was strengthening the country’s peace infrastructure by deploying a peace education curricula and supporting chiefs with tools for conflict mediation.
The president said the Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II had brought him up to speed with the Bawku peace talks which have been taking place at Manhyia Palace.
He reserved praise for the Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, the Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, citing the peaceful proposal he submitted, aimed at ending the decades-old conflict.
“I’m sure the traditional solutions we are seeking will offer us the opportunity for a sustainable peace very soon,” President Mahama said.
