The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects; five Nigerians and one Ghanaian; for their alleged involvement in a string of attacks and robberies targeting bank customers in Kumasi.

According to the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe, the suspects trailed their victims after they withdrew substantial amounts of money from various financial institutions. They then broke into the victims’ vehicles to steal the cash. These operations have reportedly been ongoing for the past month.

The breakthrough in the investigation came through police intelligence and footage from the Intelligence Video Surveillance (IVS) system monitored at the Police Emergency Command Centre. The suspects were seen using a gold-coloured Toyota Highlander with registration number GT 2471-14 and a black Toyota Highlander with registration number GX 7124-12—both bearing fake license plates.

On Thursday, June 19, 2025, around 10 a.m., the police arrested three more suspects identified as Russell Ekenze, 29, a taxi driver; Francis Friday, 49; and Linus Agwazie, 51, a trader.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted to being part of a larger criminal syndicate and confessed to committing similar crimes in multiple locations across Kumasi, including Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Mayanka, Asokwa, Kumasi Central Mosque, ShopRite, and the Georgia Hotel area.

They also named other syndicate members as Cosmas Maduabuchukwu, Ezuchukwu, C.J., DD, and Lele. Police report that Cosmas Maduabuchukwu sustained gunshot wounds during an attempted arrest but managed to escape.

All six arrested suspects are currently in police custody, and the two vehicles used in their operations have been impounded. A manhunt is underway to apprehend Maduabuchukwu and the other accomplices who remain at large.

Preliminary investigations reveal that all members of the syndicate, except for one identified as DD, are Nigerian nationals. The suspects have been arraigned before court and remanded into custody.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has reassured the public of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the region.
