Bawku Conflict: We’ll use all necessary force to restore peace – GAF

Ghana Armed Forces have transitioned from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and nearby areas after renewed violence.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced a strategic shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement operations in Bawku and surrounding areas, following a resurgence of deadly violence that claimed the lives of three students over the weekend.

According to the military, this escalation in operational posture comes on the back of renewed gun attacks on school campuses in both Bawku and Nalerigu, which have deepened fear and instability across the conflict zone.

President John Dramani Mahama, in response to the developments, has directed the Armed Forces to adopt more forceful tactics in curbing the violence, emphasizing that the actions of armed groups are deliberately undermining ongoing mediation efforts.

He urged traditional leaders in the affected communities to support peace initiatives.

In a statement released Wednesday, July 30, GAF said its operations will now be executed under a peace enforcement framework to decisively respond to violent acts that threaten national security.

The enforcement mission, according to GAF covers Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that following the directive by the President of the Republic and Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Armed Forces has with immediate effect transitioned from peacekeeping to peace enforcement operations in the area of Bawku and its environs,” the statement said.

“This transition to peace enforcement has become necessary due to activities of armed elements that have intermittently resulted in violence, reprisal attacks and innocent deaths highlighting a dangerous pattern that threatens not only Bawku but also the peace and security of our dear Nation.”

GAF clarified that its troops will conduct robust and purposeful operations aimed at restoring law and order, protecting communities, and returning stability to the region.

All citizens are advised to comply with operational directives and the newly imposed curfew from 2 p.m. to 6 a.m., which will be strictly enforced.

The military also issued a strong warning that any form of interference, including attacks on personnel, will be met with an appropriate response.

The Armed Forces called for public cooperation, especially from residents in Bawku, Binduri, Zebilla, and Nalerigu.

“The Ghana Armed Forces remains firmly committed and in readiness to execute its constitutional mandate to ensure that the country is peaceful and its citizens are safe.”
