The President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, Awulae Kwasi Armachi III, has expressed concern over the deplorable state of roads in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region.

According to the Paramount Chief of Western Nzema, the condition of the roads has become a major challenge for residents and requires urgent attention.

Awulae Kwasi Armachi III made the remarks when the Member of Parliament for Jomoro and Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, presented educational materials and scholarships to more than 1,000 pupils who had qualified to pursue various tertiary programmes.

The chief specifically raised concerns about the road linking the Samenyi Barrier area to New Town, a stretch of approximately 25 kilometres.

The route, which passes through key connections including Jaway Wharf Junction and links New Town and Half Assini, has reportedly been in poor condition, prompting residents and motorists to embark on demonstrations over the state of the road.

“The only issue that we are not satisfied with is our roads from Samenyi to Newtown, but I know that she is also talking to me about it and that she will deliver, and I know she will deliver,” Awulae Kwasi Armachi III said.

He further expressed confidence in the MP’s ability to address the concern.

“Whoever you send, the person who goes abroad and brings something new is the person you have to send,” he added.

Responding to the concern, Madam Affo-Toffey said arrangements had been made for work on the Samenyi Barrier–New Town road to commence.

She explained that the contractor was initially expected to cut the sod for construction to begin on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, but the activity had been postponed to Friday, September 18.

The Deputy Transport Minister said the contractor was also bringing new machinery to support the project, with some equipment already stationed at the Samenyi Barrier.

“Thankfully, we spoke to the contractor today. Our road from Samenyi Barrier to Newtown is our major challenge. In fact, whatever I do, that is what people ask, so the contractor has promised to be on site so that we can cut the sod for work to commence,” she said.

Madam Affo-Toffey further explained that the contractor would first construct a one-kilometre stretch of the road before President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, are expected to officially cut the sod for the project.

The development is expected to mark the commencement of work on the road, which has been identified by the traditional council and residents as a major infrastructure concern in the municipality.
