The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid glowing tribute to the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, describing him as a brilliant mind, a fearless fighter for democracy, and a compassionate leader whose legacy will endure in the party and the nation.

Delivering the tribute on behalf of the party at an interdenominational state funeral in Accra on Friday, August 15, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey praised Dr. Omane Boamah as “a man of rare intellect, resilience, and empathy,” noting that he was always ready to extend a helping hand and stood firmly for justice and accountability.

Dr. Omane Boamah was among eight people who lost their lives in the tragic military helicopter crash on August 6 in the Ashanti Region.

The disaster also claimed the lives of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

Three Air Force crew members—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—also perished.

According to the party, Dr. Omane Boamah was relentless in safeguarding the democratic process, personally monitoring ballot printing during elections and working closely with the NDC youth wing in strategy meetings with the late President John Evans Atta Mills at Kuku Hill.

His service to the nation spanned several high-profile roles. Between 2009 and 2012, he served as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology under President Mills.

Under President John Dramani Mahama, he became Minister for Communications and later Presidential Spokesperson, a role he carried out with clarity and professionalism.

In 2025, following President Mahama’s return to power, he was appointed Minister for Defence—a position he held until his untimely death.

Mr. Kwetey, speaking on behalf of the party, summed up his contribution: “Dr. Omane Boamah was not just a strategist. He was a treasure—brilliant, compassionate, and utterly fearless. His blend of intellect, empathy, and resilience made him one of the finest gifts to our party and to Ghana.”
