Apologize to Ghanaians over deceit in DStv pricing dispute – Minority to Sam George

The Minority Caucus urges the Communications Minister to apologize for misleading claims during the DStv pricing dispute and questions his competence.

The Minority Caucus has called on the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation to issue an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for what they describe as deceit and incompetence in handling the DStv subscription pricing controversy.

At a press briefing in Accra, the caucus accused the minister of abandoning his previous commitment to a 30% reduction in subscription fees and instead presenting MultiChoice’s ongoing promotional offers as the outcome of his negotiations.

“MultiChoice publicly challenged him for inaccurately claiming that there had been an agreed reduction in prices,” the caucus noted.

They argued that the minister’s actions wasted national resources and eroded public trust. “For this display of ineptitude, incompetence, and penchant for deceit, we demand that the minister render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians,” the Minority stressed.

The caucus also criticized his conduct during engagements with industry stakeholders, describing him as unfit for his role.

“This impasse reflects the minister’s lack of mental rigour in understanding and conducting negotiations,” they said, adding that his posture has denied regulators like the National Communications Authority (NCA) the space to act independently.

They further contended that his behavior undermined the standards expected of a government official. “His actions also signal a breach of the President’s code of conduct that requires candour and respect to all persons,” they stated.

The Minority underscored that the minister’s shifting positions showed deliberate dishonesty.

“He completely abandoned his original firm 30% subscription fee reduction stance, for the ongoing promotional offers by MultiChoice, which he claimed was a generational success story,” the caucus said.

They also accused him of disrespecting citizens and stakeholders throughout the negotiations.

“He has demonstrated the same by his numerous public utterances, insults to citizens and industry players during the process,” they added.

Calling for accountability on revenue accrued from penalties imposed on MultiChoice, the caucus insisted that the minister’s credibility had been severely compromised. “We call on him to account for the fines levied on DStv,” they demanded.

As a next step, the Minority warned that failure to apologise would leave no option but for him to vacate his position.

“We deem him unfit to continue as the Minister … and therefore call on him to resign or for the President to fire him,” they declared.
